Prosthodontics

What is a prosthodontist?

Literally this translates from Latin as two words: prosthesis (artificial replacements) and odontia(tooth).

The General Dental Council (GDC) defines Prosthodontics as the replacement of missing teeth and the associated soft and hard tissues by prostheses (crowns, bridges, dentures) which may be fixed or removable, or may be supported and retained by implants’.

The prosthodontist will use their skill and expertise to evaluate all restorative options available, not just implants.

Prosthodontist training (usually a 3 year accredited full-time programme) is rewarded with entry onto the GDC’s specialist register. Prosthodontics is one of the 13 official dental specialties recognised by the GDC , the UK dental professions’ regulatory body. This register is accessible to the public at www.GDC.org.uk.

From the June 2015 GDC registrant reports (www.gdc-uk.org), there were 39,486 registered  dentists in the UK, of these are 441  prosthodontists. Specialist Prosthodontists therefore occupy approximately one percent of the total number of UK dentists. This number naturally fluctuates as registrants retire and new colleagues complete their specialist training and are entered onto the list.

In addition to all routine dentistry, Ranju is able to provide the following treatments:

  • Crown & bridge
  • Aesthetic dentistry (cosmetic dentistry)
  • Implant dentistry
  • Complete (full) and partial dentures
  • TMJ (jaw joint) and bite problems
  • Tooth wear, full and partial rehabilitations
  • Second opinions on proposed dental work or failed treatments

Why do I need to see a prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists are trained to treat a variety of problems and provide multidisciplinary care for more complex cases.

Please do not hesitate to contact our team if you would like to make an appointment for a prosthodontic assessment or more routine care.
